Description
A woodblock print by Ogata Gekkō (1859–1920), a Meiji-era artist whose work encompassed [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga), [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e), and historical subjects. This untitled print may depict a woman in seasonal dress — a subject Gekkō treated across numerous single-sheet prints and series throughout the Meiji period. His bijin-ga figures are typically rendered with fine keyblock lines describing the fall of fabric, the arrangement of hair, and the gesture of hands, against backgrounds suggesting season through motifs of plum blossom, maple, chrysanthemum, or snow. The composition draws on the [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) polychrome tradition, employing multiple color blocks to achieve the soft gradation of kimono textiles and the delicate modeling of facial features. Gekkō's figure work reflects his training in both Western-influenced painting methods of the Meiji period and the classical [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) print tradition, producing a style that bridges the two.
