Description
A woodblock print by Ogata Gekkō, likely depicting either a bird-and-flower subject or a single female figure in seasonal dress — two of the genres he returned to most persistently across his career. In a [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) composition, a bird occupies the center or upper zone of the picture plane, with flowering or leafed branches providing compositional framing and seasonal identification, with fine keyblock lines describing feather detail and branch texture. In a [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) composition, the figure's relationship to a seasonal element — a garden, snowfall, or festival setting — structures the image around contrasting textures of textile pattern, flesh, and natural material. The [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) technique, with its layered color blocks printed on dampened [washi](/glossary/washi), achieves effects of tonal richness and textile shimmer within the constraints of the woodblock medium as practiced in the Meiji period.
