Description
A woodblock print by Ogata Gekkō, possibly representing a seasonal or ceremonial scene characteristic of Meiji-period decorative print production. Gekkō's oeuvre included prints associated with the traditional Japanese seasonal calendar — New Year observances, the plum and cherry blossom seasons, midsummer festivals, and autumn harvest. Figures in seasonal or festival dress, landscape elements keyed to a specific month, and symbolic objects drawn from the Japanese decorative arts tradition may all appear within such compositions. The [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) technique allows for the layering of complex pattern and color across figure and ground, and the compositional approach in seasonal prints often emphasizes horizontal banding — sky, middle ground, foreground — to suggest landscape expansiveness while keeping the scale intimate. Gekkō's facility across both figural and landscape subjects is evident in these works, which draw on Edo-period [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) tradition while reflecting compositional influences absorbed during the Meiji period.
