Description
Among Gekko's published series are several devoted to nature subjects — insects, seasonal flowers, nocturnal animals — that bridge the [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) genre with a more scientific naturalist attention to observed form. This untitled print may represent such a subject: a close study of an insect against a leaf or branch, a grouping of fungi at the base of an old tree, or a small animal in its habitat. Gekko's nature studies reflect the influence of both the Maruyama-Shijo school's emphasis on sketching from life (shasei) and the Western natural history illustration that entered Japan through Meiji-era translation culture. In such prints the subject is rendered with precision against a minimal or atmospheric background that emphasizes the specimen's formal qualities without narrative distraction.
