Description
Gekko's output during the Meiji era was substantial, encompassing single-sheet prints, series, illustrated books, and newspaper illustrations. Without visual or title documentation, this untitled print may represent his [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) work, in which elegantly dressed women of the Meiji period — wearing both kimono and Western dress — appear in garden settings or domestic interiors. Gekko's women typically carry themselves with a composed restraint that distinguishes them from the more exaggerated poses of earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) bijin-ga. His rendering of textile patterns — the dense figured designs of embroidered kosode, the geometric repeats of woven obi — was technically accomplished, requiring multiple block impressions to achieve layered pattern effects. Backgrounds in his figural prints range from flat color grounds to loosely sketched seasonal flora anchoring the figure in a recognizable season or setting.
