Description
A woodblock print by Ogata Gekkō, likely depicting a [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) (bird-and-flower) subject characteristic of his decorative work. Gekkō produced numerous bird-and-flower compositions in the [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) tradition, treating subjects including cranes, egrets, sparrows, and swallows in combination with seasonal plants — bamboo, plum, wisteria, and chrysanthemum. In such prints, the compositional emphasis is on decorative arrangement: a bird perched on a branch occupies a diagonal through the picture plane, with foliage providing both background and framing device. The color palette is typically light and clear, with delicate [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the sky or background wash. Gekkō's kacho-e draw on the long tradition of bird-and-flower painting in Chinese and Japanese art while adapting the subject to the polychrome woodblock print medium. His prints in this genre were produced in significant numbers for the Meiji-period domestic and export market.
