Description

"Yadorigi" (宿木) is the title of Chapter 49 of The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, the word meaning "mistletoe" or "lodging tree" and evoking a state of emotional dependence. Gekko produced Genji illustrations throughout his career, and this print likely depicts a scene from that chapter, presenting Heian-period court figures in layered junihitoe robes against an interior or garden setting rendered with careful attention to period detail. His bijin figures in literary illustrations convey psychological mood through posture and downcast gaze rather than facial expression, a convention drawn from earlier yamato-e painting traditions. The composition would employ the overlapping textile patterns characteristic of Gekko's courtly subjects, with seasonal botanical motifs — grasses, foliage, or blossoms — carrying the symbolic weight that classical literature demands. Multiple color blocks and fine-line carving of fabric patterns demonstrate the high technical standards of Meiji commercial printing.
