Description

A second Gekko print bearing the title "Yadorigi" suggests either a distinct design within the same Genji series or a variant impression of a related composition addressing the same chapter. Publishers of Meiji-period prints sometimes issued multiple designs under a single chapter title, allowing collectors to build thematically cohesive sets. This version may foreground different figures from Chapter 49's narrative — the prince Niou, the woman Ukifune, or attendant figures — or depict a contrasting moment within the chapter's arc of longing and displacement. Gekko's facility with figure drawing, developed through training in Kanō school painting before his shift to woodblock production, is evident in the refined postures and controlled line work of his court ladies. The technical execution would include gradated bokashi in sky passages and careful registration of overlapping color blocks in the elaborately patterned robes.
