Description
This print belongs to Gekko's "Gishi shijushichi zu" (Portraits of the Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers), a series depicting the rōnin who avenged their lord Asano Naganori's forced suicide by killing the official Kira Yoshinaka in 1703 — the Akō Incident that became the basis for the Chūshingura narrative cycle. Yato Emoshichi (矢頭右衛七), sometimes written Yatō Yagashira Emoshichi, was among the younger members of the group, reportedly seventeen years old at the time of the raid on Kira's Edo compound. Gekko's portrait presents him in warrior attire — crested kimono, hakama, and the identifying weapons of the assault — against a simplified background that directs full attention to the figure's bearing. The Meiji period sustained intense popular and artistic interest in the forty-seven rōnin as exemplars of bushidō loyalty, and Gekko's series contributed to a genre with deep roots in Edo-period kabuki and illustrated fiction. Each portrait carries name cartouches identifying the individual rōnin.
