Description
This print from Ogata Gekko's Gishi shijushichi zu (義士四十七図, Portraits of the Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers) series depicts Yoshida Sawaemon Kanesada, one of the ronin who carried out the vendetta against Kira Yoshinaka in 1703 — the event known as the Ako Incident that became a foundational narrative of samurai loyalty in Japanese popular culture. Gekko's series portrays each of the forty-seven retainers individually, typically in armor or formal warrior dress, conveying character through posture, facial expression, and attribute rather than dramatic action. Yoshida Sawaemon served as a senior retainer under Oishi Yoshio and played a significant role in coordinating the raid on Kira's compound. Gekko renders his warrior subjects with dignified restraint characteristic of Meiji-era historical portraiture, avoiding the theatrical exaggeration of earlier mie-style actor prints. The series belongs to a long tradition of Ako incident imagery in woodblock printing and reflects the renewed popular and nationalistic interest in the story during the Meiji period.
