Toraya

A collaged still life combines a stylized male figure in a wide-brimmed hat, tilted diagonally in the lower portion of the composition, with a cube patterned in red, gold, and turquoise floral and wave motifs, and sheets of layered paper or fabric printed with columns of small text in pink, olive, and tan tones. A solid black teardrop shape floats at left against the cream background, and a Japanese character appears in a dark box near the composition's center. Ouchi Makoto rendered this 1974 woodcut in colors with embossing, titled Toraya, in muted earth tones set against a plain light ground.
