Description
This print was Athalye's submitted work for the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC), the global gathering of mokuhanga practitioners held that year in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture — a region with over a millennium of [washi](/glossary/washi) papermaking tradition. Selected for the juried regional exhibition representing Europe and Africa, the print situates Athalye's London-based practice within the contemporary international mokuhanga community. Submissions to IMC exhibitions are produced using water-based pigments hand-burnished onto washi with a [baren](/glossary/baren), and the Echizen siting placed particular emphasis on the relationship between print and paper substrate. Athalye's practice through her 'Limbu Timbu' project draws on her Marathi heritage and the iconography she has developed across more than a decade of illustration work, translated into the layered registration of the woodblock medium. Her selection from the international applicant pool placed her work alongside printmakers from both regions in the 2024 exhibition cycle.
