Crosiers refers to the tightly coiled fronds of young ferns at the moment of unfurling, a form widespread in the tropical forest floors of Southeast Asia. Kiggell frequently draws on botanical observation, and the crozier's spiraling geometry — simultaneously organic and mathematically precise — suits the registration demands of mokuhanga. The water-based printing process allows for delicate tonal gradations that articulate the tender curvature of each frond. The presence of figures suggests the botanical forms are placed in relation to the human scale or environment rather than treated as isolated specimens. The [washi](/glossary/washi) support lends the image warmth and a soft, absorbent quality consonant with the organic subject.
