Description
Summer Morning exemplifies Ray Morimura's signature approach to seasonal mokuhanga, in which the early-day light filtering across traditional Japanese architecture and surrounding foliage becomes the principal subject. Works of this title in his oeuvre typically combine the bold geometric simplification of roof lines, fence panels, and stone steps with a densely patterned treatment of leaves, moss, and dappled shadow, all carved across multiple blocks and printed on [washi](/glossary/washi) using hand-pressed [baren](/glossary/baren) technique. Morimura tends to flatten depth into stacked horizontal bands, locating the viewer within an enclosed garden or temple courtyard rather than at a distant viewpoint. Greens dominate, often layered with subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations to suggest humid summer air. The work belongs to the broader [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) lineage in which the artist designs, carves, and prints every block himself, and reflects Morimura's lifelong project of documenting the quieter moments of Japanese architectural life. Like much of his summer output, it favors stillness over incident, emphasizing the meditative experience of standing within a precinct rather than passing through it.
