Description

Plums at Tenmangu (2016), a woodblock print by Ray Morimura, depicts a dense grove of gnarled, dark plum tree trunks and branches set against a vivid orange-red sky, with clusters of white five-petaled blossoms scattered across the upper branches. In the lower portion, a small red arched bridge and the corner of a building roof are visible amid stylized grey and cream foliage patterns rendered in dense linework. The composition is vertical, filling the frame almost entirely with the interlocking branches and swirling ground textures, leaving only narrow margins at the top and bottom of the sheet.
