$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Nishida's luminous landscapes have found a strong international following. Limited editions sell well.
Friend W presents a solitary cat figure, the W designation indicating a color variant within what may be a larger series exploring companionship between cats and their human or feline counterparts. Nishida's ability to invest individual cat portraits with distinct personalities has earned him a devoted following among print collectors worldwide. Each cat in his work seems to possess its own temperament, conveyed through posture, gaze direction, and the subtle positioning of ears and whiskers. The woodblock medium requires these personality cues to be distilled into carved lines and printed color areas, a process of simplification that paradoxically often makes the character more vivid than a detailed photographic rendering. The friend of the title may be implied rather than shown, present just outside the frame.
