Description
The title Senshi Bankou (千思万考) is a Japanese four-character compound (yojijukugo) meaning deep or exhaustive contemplation — literally, a thousand thoughts, ten thousand considerations. Nishida applies this philosophical register to a blue cat seated in apparent stillness, transforming an everyday feline rest posture into an image resonant with Zen associations of meditative absorption. The blue tonality, as in his Cat Poses 13, signals a deliberate departure from naturalistic representation, positioning the cat as an archetype rather than a specific animal. Compositionally, a meditating subject — closed eyes, tucked limbs, settled weight — demands careful carving of subtle surface contours to convey tranquility rather than rigidity. Bokashi gradations across the body would suggest the soft, rounded form of a cat at rest. The print exemplifies Nishida's approach of pairing playful subject matter with contemplative titles that open a conceptual dimension beyond the image itself.
