$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Nishida's luminous landscapes have found a strong international following. Limited editions sell well.
Sit Down (5) is the fifth in a series that appears to depict the act of settling into a seated position, likely featuring one of Nishida's signature cats. The command-like title anthropomorphizes the animal subject, as though the cat has been asked to sit and is complying, reluctantly or otherwise, on its own terms. By the fifth entry, the series has established a vocabulary of seated postures that reveals how much variety exists within a single basic action. Nishida carves each variation into wood blocks and prints them by hand, a labor-intensive process that rewards close looking. The numbered format invites collectors to gather multiple entries and compare the subtle differences between one sitting cat and the next.
