Homage to Monogold 1960 D directly references Yves Klein's Monogold series, in which Klein applied gold leaf to monochrome panels. Murakami reinterprets that gesture through his Superflat framework: the offset lithograph base establishes a flat, graphically resolved image while applied gold leaf adds physical texture and material value to the surface. The work participates in a broader dialogue Murakami has conducted with Western postwar abstraction, examining how concepts of artistic originality and material preciousness translate across cultural contexts. The gold leaf, historically significant in Japanese lacquerware and Kano school screen painting, carries different connotations in a Japanese context than it does within the European Arte Povera lineage Klein inhabited.
