Description
This ink-on-paper landscape, held in the collection of the Musée de l'École de Nancy in France, dates from Hokkai's European period or shortly thereafter and records his impression of an alpine mountain mass observed during his 1885-1888 forestry studies in Lorraine and the Vosges. The composition is a relatively spare, vertical landscape in which a single dominant peak rises from a base of forested slopes, with the brushwork combining the calligraphic economy of the Japanese literati tradition and a sectional, geological reading of the mountain that reflects Hokkai's parallel scientific training. The painting's presence in Nancy, alongside works by Émile Gallé and other figures of the École de Nancy Art Nouveau circle, documents Hokkai's documented role in the cultural exchange between Japanese landscape painting and French decorative arts during the formative years of European Japonisme.
