Description
Closely allied with 'Chance and Grids,' this woodblock print foregrounds external variables—atmospheric, material, contextual—in the determination of the pictorial outcome. Qian may have varied pressure, moisture, paper state, or pigment density across impressions, allowing the studio environment to participate as an active agent in composition. Such practice extends mokuhanga's traditional attentiveness to humidity and pigment behavior into an explicitly conceptual register: rather than seeking edition uniformity, the work registers the specific conditions under which each sheet was pulled. The likely result is a field-like image in which planned structure dissolves into tonal incident, recording the moment of its own making. The print belongs to Qian's process-titled series, where each piece names the generative principle—chance, grid, environment—that organizes both its making and its viewing.
