Description
This hand-colored o-oban yoko-e (horizontal large sheet) tan-e of around 1707 belongs to a series titled Kanazawa Hakkei (Eight Scenes of Kanazawa), depicting episodes from a play set in the Kanazawa region. The scene shown - The Dance of Asahina and Umejumaru - is a paired-figure composition in which two characters perform a stylized dance, their bodies arranged across the horizontal format. The larger size and horizontal orientation are unusual in Kiyonobu's surviving production, which is dominated by vertical hosoban actor prints, and they suggest that the Kanazawa Hakkei series was intended for a wealthier collector market. The orange tan pigment, applied to the costumes by hand, adds visual weight to the figures against the unmarked ground. Held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
