Description
Documented as having been produced for the 1700 third-month staging of Wakoku Gosuiden at the Morita-za, this hand-colored [oban](/glossary/oban) tan-e shows Uemura Kichisaburo in the role of the Third Princess. The print's specific attribution to a particular play, theatre, and month is unusually precise for the period and reflects the close commercial relationship Kiyonobu had established with the Morita-za and the other two Edo licensed theatres. The Torii workshop produced both the large painted kanban that hung outside the theatres and these smaller printed sheets sold to audiences as souvenirs and to absent fans who wanted to know what their favorite actors had performed. The tan-e coloring, applied in vivid orange and yellow strokes, picks out the elaborate princess costume. The impression is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
