BIJING NOW DRAWING 05

An abstract composition built from densely packed patterned fields—dot grids, florals, mazelike lines, radiating starburst circles, and small medallions—rendered almost entirely in shades of indigo, cornflower, and white, with gold outlines tracing the borders between sections. White drip marks run vertically down the lower-center portion of the image, breaking the flat patterning with a sense of liquid motion. Toru Ishii's 2016 acrylic ink on paper work "Bijing Now Drawing 05" has no discernible figures or setting, instead reading as an all-over mosaic of textile-like motifs pieced together into a single square field.
