Description
Tōshūsai Sharaku's 1794 portrait of Ōtani Tokuji I as the manservant Sodesuke is among the artist's most decisive Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e), a half-length design that brings the diagnostic close-up of the okubi-e tradition to bear on a low-status supporting role. Sodesuke is a yakko or samurai's footman, a stock figure of Edo kabuki, and Sharaku gives Tokuji a coarse, heavy face that conveys the character's social position without lapsing into caricature. The eyes are slightly crossed in concentration; the mouth is pulled into a hard horizontal line; the broad jaw and tense neck communicate a body braced for violence. The composition pushes the bust forward into the picture plane, leaving only a narrow band of muted ground around the figure, and the patterned haori falls into flat geometric shapes that throw the modeled head into strong relief. As with all of Sharaku's known work, the print was published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, whose specialized carvers and printers gave the artist's exacting line its full force. The signature in the right margin uses the formula that Tsutaya adopted for Sharaku's various series during Kansei 6 and 7. The impression in the Art Institute of Chicago demonstrates that even the most marginal kabuki roles received Sharaku's full attention: rather than treating the manservant as a vehicle for amusement, he renders Sodesuke as a complete human being whose particular face is part of the play's social texture. The print is also a reminder that the okubi-e format was an analytical tool for Sharaku, not merely a marketing strategy.
