Description
A print prepared for the International Mokuhanga Conference 2024, held in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture — a region historically associated with the production of [kozo](/glossary/kozo) [washi](/glossary/washi) favored by mokuhanga practitioners. Conference submissions typically take the form of small-edition prints exchanged among participating artists, and works prepared for the Echizen iteration often engage directly with the materiality of the washi support, allowing fiber, deckle, and absorbency to remain visible within the composition. Consistent with Moilanen's broader practice, the image likely draws on Finnish natural subjects — birch, water, snow, or the low northern light — translated into the water-based pigment vocabulary of mokuhanga. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations applied with a wide brush before [baren](/glossary/baren) impression are characteristic of her handling, producing the soft tonal transitions that suit Nordic atmospheric subjects. The print situates Moilanen within the international mokuhanga community that has formed around the IMC since its founding in 2011, where European, North American, and Japanese practitioners convene to exchange technique and extend the tradition beyond its historical [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) roots.
