Description
Created in 2018, this urban night scene depicts Helsinki in a state of wakeful darkness — likely the deep blue summer nights or the drawn-out winter darkness particular to the Finnish capital. Mokuhanga's capacity for rich, layered blues and blacks, built through multiple transparent impressions, suits nocturnal urban subjects well. Moilanen would draw on architectural forms — windows, streetlights, reflections on wet pavement — as compositional elements, their geometric regularity contrasting with the organic gradations of the night sky. The title's personal inflection suggests the scene may incorporate a figure at a window or observed street, connecting interiority and urban nightscape in the manner of twentieth-century Scandinavian printmaking traditions.
