Description

This 1845 sheet from Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets (Ogura nazora-e Hyaku-nin isshu), held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, comes from one of the most ambitious print projects of mid-nineteenth-century Edo. The series was designed jointly by Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige, and Kunisada, each contributing a portion of the one hundred designs that pair the canonical waka of the Hyakunin Isshu anthology with imaginative pictorial "imitations" drawn from history, legend, and the kabuki stage. The format gave Kuniyoshi a chance to bring his strengths as a designer of warrior prints, ghost stories, and theatrical scenes into dialogue with classical poetic culture. Within each composition a cartouche presents the poem and its author, while the lower portion of the sheet depicts a chosen figure or episode, all printed in carefully registered colour blocks by the leading Edo publishers and carvers of the period. Costumes, hairstyles, and accessories are rendered with the attention to material detail that characterises mid-1840s ukiyo-e at its peak. The Victoria and Albert Museum preserves a substantial group of sheets from the series, making it possible to trace how Kuniyoshi alternated between violent action scenes and quieter, character-focused designs. Considered together, his contributions to the Ogura nazora-e Hyaku-nin isshu illustrate the breadth of his imagination and his ongoing engagement with both literary tradition and popular Edo culture.
