Description
This mokuhanga monoprint extends the compositional logic of Shibata's diamond grid work by containing the lattice within a hexagonal boundary. The hexagon imposes a secondary geometric order — a frame within the field — creating tension between the diagonal rhombus pattern and the six-sided enclosure. Where the grid extends to the hexagon's edges, the clipping of diamonds at the perimeter creates partial forms that activate the negative space of the surrounding sheet. The compressed intersection of two geometric systems gives the composition a more complex spatial character than a continuous grid alone would produce. As a monoprint, the impression retains the expressive variability inherent to hand-printing with water-based pigments on [washi](/glossary/washi), including subtle gradations of tone across the printed surface.
