Honjo Masahiko

Honjo Masahiko (本庄正彦, born 1963) is a contemporary Japanese mokuhanga printmaker who has revitalized the classical kacho-ga genre --- images of flowers and birds --- through woodblock prints of exceptional technical refinement and naturalistic detail. Born in Kobe in 1963, he graduated from Kyoto University of Education in 1986 and studied printmaking under the Kyoto woodblock artist Masao Ido, from whom he absorbed the meticulous craftsmanship and self-publishing ethic that defines the best contemporary mokuhanga practice.

Honjo follows the traditional mokuhanga process in its entirety, designing, carving, and printing each work by hand. His compositions depict seasonal blooms, garden plants, and wild birds with a precision that honors the long lineage of Japanese nature painting stretching back through Edo-period kacho-e to the decorative traditions of the Rimpa school, while his use of color and light reflects a contemporary sensibility.

Honjo has for many years been a regular participant in the annual CWAJ (College Women's Association of Japan) print shows, one of the most important venues for contemporary Japanese printmaking, and he exhibits widely in Japan through solo and group shows at respected galleries. While he is well known and well represented within Japan's printmaking community, he remains less widely known abroad than his technical accomplishment and consistent output would warrant.

His prints represent a quiet but significant current in contemporary Japanese art: the continuation of classical subject matter through traditional craft methods, maintained at a level of quality that demonstrates the ongoing vitality of mokuhanga as a living artistic practice rather than a historical medium.
