Biography
Ryo Nishimura is one of Japan's most promising emerging printmakers, a Kyoto-based artist whose drypoint etchings explore themes of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence with remarkable maturity and technical skill. Born in 1993 in Kyoto, Nishimura studied in the Print Department at Kyoto Seika University, earning his Bachelor's degree in 2016, then completed graduate training at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2017.
Nishimura is drawn to the medium of drypoint etching, which is typically executed with an etching needle on copper plates. However, this young artist, mindful of both his budget and the material's unique properties, prefers thick sheets of plexiglass as his matrix, which he then works with various power tools to create his distinctive lines. This unconventional material choice produces a different quality of burr and mark than copper, contributing to the unique character of his prints.
Through drypoint, Nishimura explores enduring human themes — life and death, the cyclical nature of existence, and the quiet persistence of eternity. His work is distinguished by its intricate balance of fragility and strength; the fine, blurred lines characteristic of drypoint are ideal for expressing both presence and impermanence, light and shadow, reality and reflection. He deliberately employs the polarity of black and white as a compositional strategy, drawing creative inspiration from natural phenomena including smoke, fire, oil in water, and clouds.
Nishimura's work has earned multiple distinctions, including the Kyoten Award at the Kyoto City Museum, the Chihiro Watanabe Award, the Takao Hiwasaki Award at the Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of Prints, and the Young Printmaker Award at the prestigious CWAJ Print Show in Tokyo in 2018. That same year, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Tolman Collection in Tokyo. He has also exhibited at the International Print Biennial in Varna, Bulgaria, and the German International Exhibition of Graphic Art in Frechen.
His prints are held in notable collections including LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts, and the Kyoto Bank collection.
