$300–$2,500. Common prints: $300–$800. Key value factors: Amano's sosaku-hanga prints are modestly priced. Bold, well-preserved abstract works are most valued.
Manaita takes its title from the Japanese word for a cutting board, the flat wooden surface on which food is prepared with a knife. This title connects directly to the woodblock itself: both the manaita and the printing block are flat wooden surfaces subjected to repeated cutting, their surfaces scarred and transformed by the action of sharp blades. Amano draws a quiet parallel between the kitchen tool and the artist's tool, both bearing the accumulated marks of purposeful work.
This woodblock print transforms the humble domestic reference into an investigation of surface, mark, and the passage of material through transformation. A cutting board accumulates a history of cuts, nicks, and stains that record every meal prepared upon it. Similarly, a woodblock carries the permanent record of every gouge the artist makes. Amano's print preserves this connection between utility and art, between the everyday act of cutting and the creative act of carving.
Manaita was created by Amano Kazumi (天野和美).
Manaita depicts still life and abstract.
