Face

Face — a figure subject within Amano's predominantly abstract oeuvre, the human face rendered with the same geometric reduction he applies to birds, fish, and enclosures. The face as abstract composition reduces the most recognizable of subjects to its essential geometric structure: the oval of the head, the horizontal bands of brow and eyes, the vertical axis of nose and mouth. Amano's treatment would not be portraiture but formal investigation, the face as compositional problem rather than psychological study.
