First Spring — B is the second variation in Amano's depiction of hatsuharu, the first spring — that season-opening moment when new warmth and light return after winter's austerity. First spring in Japanese poetic tradition carries enormous positive charge: the sense of release, of renewal, of the natural world's recommitment to growth.
