Description
Fish A is a variant or companion piece within Amano's early fish series, the letter designation indicating one iteration among several compositional studies of the same subject. Like the other fish works from this period, it reflects Amano's self-taught development of a formal language that treats the aquatic body as a vehicle for exploring shape, pattern, and color relationship. The fish may be depicted from above or in profile, its form outlined in incised relief and filled with flat pigment areas rather than graduated wash. Embossing may appear along the fins or body axis, adding a tactile dimension perceptible in raking light. This serial approach — studying a single motif across multiple compositions — became characteristic of Amano's practice and anticipates the extended Morning Moon sequence of his later career.
