Description
Morning Moon 91 represents a refined moment within Amano Kunihiro's serial investigation of lunar imagery, following closely on number 90 and suggesting incremental compositional adjustment rather than dramatic revision. The moon in these later-numbered works in the series may occupy a more abstracted pictorial space, with geometric elements — possibly echoing obi textile patterns — framing or bisecting the lunar disk. Amano's use of embossing without ink creates areas of dimensionality that shift with raking light, lending the print an object-like quality rare in the woodblock medium. The Morning Moon titles collectively demonstrate his interest in a natural phenomenon that is simultaneously concrete and transient.
