Description
Number 032 in the washi sticker sequence, this small mokuhanga is printed on adhesive-backed Japanese paper using water-based pigments and a baren. By the thirty-second entry, the series has accumulated enough variations for the project to read as a sustained inquiry into pigment, paper, and block surface rather than a set of isolated images. The miniature format restricts the number of color blocks Goesel can practically register, which tends to produce compositions reliant on a strong key-block silhouette and one or two carefully tuned bokashi passes. The use of washi as carrier rather than wall-bound sheet locates the work within a contemporary international mokuhanga current that treats the substrate itself as subject. Goesel's selection for the juried Asia exhibition at the 2024 Imadate gathering placed her practice within a cohort of twenty-nine artists similarly extending the technique.
