Description
Goesel's submission to the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference, held in Echizen, Japan in 2024 under the theme 'Inheritance and Innovation: Mokuhanga Artists Explore Japanese Paper.' The work was selected for the juried Asia exhibition, a cohort of twenty-nine artists working in or from the Asian region, and shown at the Imadate Art Center in one of Japan's principal washi-producing districts. As a conference submission responding directly to the paper-focused theme, the print engages mokuhanga's foundational relationship between carved block, water-based pigment, and absorbent washi substrate. The Echizen context is significant: the region has produced washi for over a millennium, and exhibiting there places Goesel's practice in dialogue with the material lineage that mokuhanga depends on. Within her wider output, which includes the ongoing washi sticker series, this larger conference piece represents the more public, exhibition-scale facet of her work.
