Description

This kacho-e (flower-and-bird print) depicts camellia blossoms (tsubaki) in both red and white varieties, a subject with longstanding resonance in Japanese art due to the flower's late-winter to early-spring blooming season. Aoyama Masaharu uses the tsubaki's bold circular form and waxy, rounded petals as a structural counterpoint to the elongated elliptical leaves. The contrast between crimson and white blossoms on adjacent stems or a single branch creates a color dialogue at the compositional center. Woodblock printing of camellia subjects required careful management of color boundaries where petal meets leaf, demanding fine carving and exact registration to prevent color bleed. The dark green of the leaves, often rendered with a slight sheen through burnished printing, emphasizes the brightness of the blooms. Aoyama's approach likely favors botanical precision in the rendering of petal structure and leaf venation, situating the composition within kacho-e conventions that valued close observation of the natural world alongside decorative formal arrangement.
