Description
"Room 303" is one of Takeda's 2009 numbered-room "Interiors," etched and aquatinted on copper in her familiar muted-grey tonality. The title suggests a depicted dining scene — a table set, a meal served, a household assembled — undermined by the second half of the caption: even the dog refuses the food. The print registers this through residual evidence rather than direct narrative incident: a quiet table, an animal turned away, a figure or two whose poses register the surrounding tension. Aquatint provides the tonal range across walls, fabric, and shadow; etched line carries the structural drawing of furniture and figures. The flat compositional space, perpendicular and slightly cramped, is consistent with Takeda's wider treatment of Japanese apartment interiors from this period. Within the room-numbered series the print stands as one of the more pointed entries — domestic dysfunction implied through a refused meal — but the technical handling stays unfussed, observational, and aligned with the deadpan sensibility that runs through her contemporary work.
