Description
This print depicts one or more figures in a dance pose, placing it within the broader category of performing-arts subjects that appeared frequently in shin-hanga of the 1930s alongside bijin-ga. Dance subjects allowed artists to explore dynamic figural arrangements and elaborate costume detail simultaneously. The kimono or performance garment would have demanded fine color registration across multiple blocks to capture layered textiles, wide sleeves in motion, and decorative obi. Kotani's female perspective may have lent particular attentiveness to the nuances of posture and dress associated with classical Japanese dance forms such as nihon buyo. Gradated bokashi in the background and selective mica ground treatments were period-appropriate techniques that publishers employed to add luminosity to performance subjects.
