"Akashi" is Chapter 13 of The Tale of Genji, in which the exiled Genji arrives at the remote coastal province of Akashi after the supernatural storms that followed his banishment from the capital. There he meets the Akashi Novice and his beautiful, accomplished daughter — the Lady of Akashi — and begins the relationship that will produce Genji's daughter, who will ultimately become Empress. The windswept, remote beauty of the Akashi coast and the melancholy of exile give this chapter its distinctive atmosphere. Ebina's print likely depicts the sea-battered landscape and the first encounter between Genji and the Akashi family.
