"Kiritsubo" is the opening chapter of The Tale of Genji, establishing the central tragedy of the narrative: the death of the Emperor's beloved consort Kiritsubo — Genji's mother — who dies when Genji is still an infant, unable to survive the jealousy and persecution of the other court ladies. The Emperor's grief for Kiritsubo, and his obsessive love for the young Fujitsubo who resembles her, set in motion the entire novel's meditation on love, loss, and the ways the past shapes the living. Ebina opens his illustrated cycle with this foundational grief.
