"Akashi" (Chapter 13) appears again in this variant or alternate rendering from Ebina's Genji series, depicting Genji's arrival and sojourn in the remote coastal province where he meets the Lady of Akashi. This alternate version may explore a different moment within the chapter's narrative — perhaps Genji's initial arrival during the storm-lashed autumn, or his first meeting with the Lady of Akashi herself, or the domestic intimacy that develops over the course of the exile. Multiple illustrations of the same chapter allowed Ebina to explore different facets of Murasaki Shikibu's narrative.
