"Yomogyu" or "Weeds" (Chapter 15) depicts the neglected estate of Suetsumuhana — the eccentric, red-nosed princess whom Genji has forgotten during his exile — overgrown with mugwort (yomogi) and other weeds, the abandoned garden a visual emblem of the woman's situation: left alone, without patronage, the elegance of her estate decayed into wildness. When Genji returns and finds her still faithful and unchanged in her bizarre way, the chapter becomes one of the novel's most affecting meditations on loyalty and neglect. Ebina's rendering of the weed-choked garden conveys this melancholy.
