Chapter 39- Yugiri - 夕霧

"Yugiri" (Evening Mist) is Chapter 39 of The Tale of Genji, which focuses on Genji's son Yugiri and his long-harbored love for his childhood companion Kumoi-no-kari's friend Lady Ochiba — the widow of his old friend Kashiwagi. The chapter shows the next generation of Genji's world beginning to make its own patterns of desire and consequence, as Yugiri's disciplined, dutiful character is finally overcome by a passion he can no longer contain. Ebina's print depicts this moment of generational transition, where the children of the great figures begin to inhabit their own stories.
