Illustrations for Genji Monogatari (54)

This print is the 54th in Ebina's complete illustrated sequence of The Tale of Genji, which contains exactly 54 chapters. The final chapter, "The Floating Bridge of Dreams" (Yume no ukihashi), ends the novel mid-sentence, its conclusion withheld — a gesture of incompleteness that has fascinated readers and scholars for a millennium. Ebina's illustration of this closing chapter would have required distilling the accumulated weight of the entire narrative into a single image: the oneiric bridge between worlds that the title promises but never fully reveals.
