"Tamakatsura" is Chapter 22 of The Tale of Genji, in which the young woman Tamakatsura — daughter of the courtier Tō no Chūjō and the dancer Yūgao, raised in distant Kyūshū — is brought to the capital and installed by Genji in his Rokujō-in palace, where she becomes the center of romantic attention from numerous suitors. Tamakatsura's story occupies several chapters of the novel's middle section, her arrival in the capital and her navigation of its complex social world reflecting a different kind of female experience from the great ladies of the main narrative. Ebina's print introduces this newcomer to Genji's world.
