"Usu Gumo — A Wreath of Cloud" (Chapter 19, Usugumo) depicts the chapter in which Lady Rokujō and her daughter depart for Ise — the Lady finally removing herself from the capital and from Genji's orbit. "Thin clouds" or "wreath of cloud" evokes the parting: the haziness of the departure, the way the sky veils the distance that is growing between Genji and this complex, dangerous woman who has loved him. The chapter is one of leave-taking and unresolved feeling. Ebina's print captures the atmospheric melancholy of this parting.
