Description
A reservoir subject foregrounds the reflective surface of still water, a motif that allows Fujita to explore the mirror relationship between sky and landscape. In mokuhanga, flat water can be rendered through near-unmodulated color fields interrupted by reflected verticals — tree trunks, embankment edges — printed from separate blocks. The composition likely divides the picture plane horizontally, with the waterline serving as the central axis. This structural simplicity is characteristic of Fujita's mature work, in which natural subjects become pretexts for formal investigation of tone and interval. The absence of human figures or built elements would concentrate attention entirely on the relationship between water, sky, and the enclosing treeline.
